"Thickets" by Alexander Irving

Thickets is an exhibition of text-based paintings and works on paper through which language becomes form, and form suggests a poetics of reverie. In these works, the boundary between the legible word and the abstract mark dissolves. Text is transformed into a physical, layered presence. Figures twist and sentences become dense undergrowth, the canvas exploring the tension between clarity and obscurity. Just as a physical thicket challenges navigation, these pieces invite viewers to lose themselves within dense clusters of ink, and pigment. Words are layered until they lose their syntax, re-emerging as rhythm, texture, and silhouette. What remains is not a text to be read linearly, but a visual topography. By disrupting our ordinary relationship with language, the artist creates an open-ended space for contemplation. Stripped of immediate utility, the forms invite the subconscious to wander, prompting viewers to trace the brambles of memory, silence, and emotion. Thickets asks us to consider what happens when words fail to explain, but instead, begin to exist.
