Join us for spoken word, storytelling, dance, music, and poetry from seasoned local artists and new voices. Exploring themes of migration, home, identity, and refuge, this series complements our Sanctuary exhibition, which examines the right to safe haven through the work of leading contemporary international artists. These free performances take place inside the Sanctuary exhibition gallery every Wednesday night in April at 5 pm, 6 pm, and 7 pm.

April 1

Artist Janice Jo Lee and dancer Sze-Yang Ade-Lam use vocal looping, improvisation, poetry, music, and movement to explore the many places we find home.

April 8

DJ SlowPitchSound remixes songs of safety, sanctuary, and home alongside contemporary urban dance from Lybido.

April 15

Poet Hussein Jadavji has brought together a group of local emerging artists to share their experiences of belonging and identity through spoken word.

April 22

Poet, artist educator, and land artist Sheniz Janmohamed presents her mandala-based participatory art project, which includes poetry recitations alongside live music.

April 29

Singer Maryem Tollar and storyteller Dawne McFarlane create a musical storytelling experience exploring the themes of our Sanctuary exhibition.

The Sanctuary Series is part of our 2019/20 Performing Arts season, Listening to Each Other, which pays tribute to the role of the performing arts in connecting communities, preserving culture, and spurring social change.
