The Four Temperaments & Cacti & Rubies
Mr. Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments is set to a score by Paul Hindemith and is a series of variations based on the concept of the four humours – melancholic, sanguinic, phlegmatic and choleric.
Cacti by Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman is full of inventive uses of space, sound and physical design as well as a great deal of humour.
Set to Igor Stravinsky’s Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, Rubies is the centrepiece in George Balanchine’s Jewels and revels in the score’s jazz-infused rhythms.
