On May 3rd we welcome to the podium the talented and hilarious Catherine Reitman, creator, producer, director, and star of CBC’s new hit comedy, Workin’ Moms. Like Kate, her character on the show, Catherine is equally as dedicated to her career as she is to her family, and will share her insights on the real-life enigma so many women juggling children and career face: the art of being a mother, without losing yourself.

Who is Catherine Reitman? Catherine Reitman is a Canadian-American actress, comedian, producer, writer and director, best known for her roles in ABC’s hit show Blackish and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In 2016, Reitman formed Wolf & Rabbit Entertainment ULC. with her husband Philip Sternberg to produce the half-hour, single-camera comedy Workin’ Moms for CBC. She is the creator, executive producer, writer and star of Workin’ Moms, and directed two of the 13 episodes in Season 1.

Off camera and out of the studio, Catherine is a mom of two boys who knows intimately the struggles working mothers face on a daily - even hourly - basis. Having herself experienced postpartum depression and the stress of going back to work with a young baby at home plus one on the way, Catherine is candid about the challenges she faced and how she found opportunity amidst the struggle: “I was in the midst of an identity crisis, I’d come home crying to my husband and we found ourselves thinking, There’s comedy to be had here. It’s just about how it’s told.”

So, Catherine started writing, adding comedic twists to real-life anecdotes she had experienced as a mother juggling both a growing family and career. It was this balancing - and sometimes toppling - act that would come to form the basis of Workin’ Moms.

The show remains largely drawn from Reitman’s own personal experiences. It examines the modern ideal that working mothers can have it all, following four new mothers who meet in a judgmental mommies’ group and end up forming an unlikely friendship. The series provides a raw and honest look at how they juggle their burgeoning identities as urban mothers with their former career-focused selves.
