The Tenant Turn Up
THE TENANT TURN UP MINI-TOUR // w/ LAL + LEE REED + CHEKO SALAAM // Connecting the Tenant struggles and fundraising efforts of Parkdale, Herongate and the Stoney Creek Towers // THR NOV 08 - Hamilton // FRI NOV 09 - Toronto // SAT NOV 10 - Ottawa
Canada is in the midst of the worst affordable housing crisis in its history. Many working class folks and families are unable to find adequate and affordable housing. Here in Ontario, nearly half of renters pay an ‘unaffordable’ rental housing cost. And with rising rents / housing costs, shrinking vacancy rates, stagnating incomes and limited access to subsidized housing, more and more working class Ontario families are feeling the effects of the crisis.
With housing policies written in the Landlord’s interest; no action or protection from Queens Park; and no justice at the Province’s Landlord Tenant Board - Ontario tenants have been hung out to dry, as their communities are being bought up and they are being displaced to make room for luxury condos and upscale apartments. The market hungers for more housing investment opportunities. Across the province rents are soaring, vacancies are low, and folks can’t find shelter within their price range.
On the frontline of this housing crisis, facing displacement from their homes and communities - working class tenants from Toronto’s Parkdale neighbourhood, Hamilton’s Stoney Creek Towers and Ottawa’s Herongate community have gotten together with their neighbours, have gotten organized and have been fighting back.
Inspired by the working class badassery of these tenant organizers.. artists and renters LAL (Toronto), LEE REED (Hamilton) and CHEKO SALAAM (Ottawa) have planned a solidarity fundraising mini-tour - to help connect the struggles and organizing of these communities, and to help raise some dollars for their respective fundraising campaigns. With 3-dates of ‘Pay What You Can’ performances - Hamilton, Toronto and Ottawa. Mark your calendars. Spread some word. And join us for an evening of solidarity and song!
