Severing attachments: Sharp Words for Truth Seekers

The mind is the central point of all sensory activities. Given sufficient spiritual nourishment, it can become a storehouse of positive force, but mislead or let run loose it will certainly plunge us further into the dark grip of illusion -- or "maya" as great sages from eastern yoga traditions have called it. The best way to train the mind is through association, and indeed the best association is the sage or "sadhu", that is - someone on the path of spiritual science or self realization. Over the course of our lifetime we have developed several attachments and to attain the platform of perfect knowledge it is required that we transform our material attachments to spiritual ones. The self-controlled and practicing sadhus can charge our journey into full speed by imparting transcendental wisdom. Such wisdom however needn't always come in gentle, soothing, poetic one-liners. In fact, the word "sadhu" also means 'one who cuts' or cuts through the material attachments of an individual to really strike at their spiritual core. Likewise the sadhu may sometimes speak sharp words to the student to really cut away their bondage and free their minds. Truth seekers all over the world should recognize that compromise and flattery may attract us to the outward dress of a seemingly saintly person, but the strong, piercing words of a true sadhu will awaken us to spiritual life, far away from the mundane world of illusion.
