Return to the Sea Art Exhibition
Return to the Sea / Trở Lại Về Biển" explores themes of transformation, longing, and return through the symbolism of sea glass. What began as a personal ritual of searching for fragments along the shore evolved into a profound metaphor for the artist’s own journey of self-discovery and resilience. The exhibition reflects on the cyclical nature of change — from brokenness to renewal — and the complex histories of migration, displacement, and survival, particularly within the context of the Vietnamese refugee experience.
The works in the exhibition, including "Map of Vietnam," "Qua Nước Mỹ," and "Just Another Statistic," use sea glass to symbolize how identities, cultures, and histories are reshaped by time and circumstance. The title, "Return to the Sea / Trở Lại Về Biển," written in the artist’s imperfect Vietnamese, highlights the fractured inheritance of language and identity experienced by children of immigrants. This exhibition also addresses queerness, human rights, and sexuality within Asian immigrant communities, opening a space for conversations often left unspoken.
Co-curated with Anson Ng and organized by Rachel Parry , the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of personal and collective identity, inviting them to engage with the layers of meaning embedded in each piece. Through this dialogue, the artist seeks to illuminate the intersection of memory, culture, and transformation.
This is a free event from February 16th to March 1 for two weeks, tickets are not required and is located in the concourse level of Chinatown Center Mall, 222 Spadina, unit #13
