“You say we’re manufactured, to that we all agree! So make your choice and we’ll rejoice in never being free! Hey-hey we are The Monkees, we’ve said it all before, the money’s in, we’re made of tin, we’re here to give you more!”

Bursting out of their manufactured plastic shell, The Monkees emerged in a psychedelic trip-out called HEAD. Written by Jack Nicholson in an LSD haze, based off of tape-recorded brainstorming by the band, Bob Rafelson and Nicholson; this movie reflected not only topical issues like the Vietnam War and drug culture, but aggressively showcased how little The Monkees wanted to continue being a commercially groomed and non-threatening pop band. They had a message they wanted to tell: they wanted to make their own music, play their own instruments, and have creative control over the future of their band. Unfortunately, HEAD was met with almost no critical success and basically halted their careers; it was too different from what Monkees fans were used to, and the politically conscious acid-heads they were reaching out to had already deemed the band square and inconsequential. But now contemporary audiences can look back and see how wrong they were, this movie is an amazingly respectable, anti-establishment, unbridled and funny statement film with an absolutely flawless soundtrack and it is going to look gorgeous on The Royal's big screen!

HEAD is ostensibly plotless, carrying out a series of vignettes that skewer Hollywood, the music industry, the Vietnam war, but most importantly, themselves. It is funny, it is political and it is very, very loud.

Our freaky screenings wouldn't be the same without our sponsors Delirium Magazine and Eyesore Cinema!
