RACHMANINOFF: Preludes of the North
Join us for second recital of the WRITE OFF THE KEYBOARD Free Noon Hour Series!
The month of November features RACHMANINOFF: Preludes of the North on Thursday, November 6th at 12noon. Join us in the St. Lawrence Centre's Bluma Appel Lobby for this free, one-hour performance. Six of Rachmaninoff's piano preludes are performed, complemented by the Three Preludes of 2003 and selections from a new cycle: "Sunplanes."
'Preludes of the North' explores the remarkable genre of the piano prelude, as heard through the pen of formidable Russian composer-pianist: Sergei Rachmaninoff. Undoubtedly influenced by Frederic Chopin's seminal 24 Preludes, Op. 28, Rachmaninoff's own set of twenty-four synthesize a gelid northern atmosphere. These unmistakably icy soundscapes are dramatic and darkly-hued, offering wondrous narratives through an impressive range of emotional states. In juxtaposition to these late romantic works, more recent northern preludes - from our country's own vantage point - round out the programme.
