Pernamundo By Katia Mesel Toronto Film Premiere feat XOCO

Join us for a family-friendly Toronto film premiere celebrating the life’s work of Pernambuco's first female documentary filmmaker Katia Mesel. A collection of primarily short films most featuring Mestre Sérgio Xocolate, will be screened followed by an artist Q&A and a taste of live traditional music by XOCÔ & friends celebrating the culture of North Eastern Brazil.

The self-taught groundbreaking documentary filmmaker Katia Mesel has been working in the medium since 1968. As an award-winning documentarian, screenwriter, director, producer and art director, she has completed more than 300 films including 20 works in the super 8 format. A trailblazing woman artist, celebrated as Brazil’s first major female documentary filmmaker, Mesel founded ARRECIFE Productions and has participated in countless festivals, curatorial juries, workshops and television productions.

Mestre Sérgio Xocolate AKA XOCÓ

Xocolate is on a mission to bridge the cultural and musical gaps, bringing the vibrant traditions of Afro Indigenous Brazilian rhythms into the contemporary music scene. XOCÔ's recent album is more than just music; it's a cultural exchange, a musical journey and an homage to Sérgio's Afro Indigenous heritage uniting ancestral rhythms with psychedelic rock, blues, funk and even drum & bass.

M. Xocolate is a Master teacher of Traditional Capoeira celebrating a forty year practice and career, also a multi-talented artist recognized internationally for his dedication and contributions to music, culture and education.XOCÔ will be showcasing at this year's International Indigenous Music Summit.
