Paris is Burning

When Jennie Livingston’s landmark documentary about the Harlem drag ball scene was eventually released in 1991, it lent visibility to an influential and symbolic subculture of competitive voguing. The Balls proved an essential, safe and uniting space where Black and Latinx gay and trans communities came together to both escape and artistically confront the inequities of their everyday lives. A time capsule of resistance and celebration, set against the backdrop of a broken American dream, Paris is Burning was recently restored and remains essential viewing.
