ARTIST STATEMENT:

Out here. Where we stand, where we come undone.

This group exhibit explores the way we, as Filipino-Canadians, claim our presence and identity in the outside world. Exposed, in limbo, we become and challenge "the Other".

Out here. Where we change, where we connect. Where we don't make sense.

Curated by Bea Palanca, Darrel Gamotin, and the program participants.

CLUTCH and NAVIGATION are free six-month, arts-based, cultural immersion programs for young Filipino women and men, respectively, to start a dialogue with each other, get mentorship from professional artists within the community, have access to professional tools to hone their creativity, define their identity, explore their cultural heritage, and tell their stories on their own terms. These programs aim to provide hands-on artistic and leadership development, through the exploration of cultural identity as their foundation for empowerment.

Under the guidance of mentors, these young artists explore storytelling, print making, tribal traditions, installation, songwriting, graphic design, poetry, Philippine history, and more. The end result of these intensive workshops and cultural exploration is this multi-disciplinary body of work that continues CLUTCH's five-year exhibition series and launches the much anticipated NAVIGATION.
