"Mourning Lodge" is a 4 day live installation created by 2Spirit artist ALEC BUTLER at Artscape Gibraltar Point, in honour of Kathleen Brindley 1942-2007, the subject of his new film "My Friend Brindley", an unsung lesbian hero, artist and human rights activist who passed away in his arms seven years ago. Alec will spend 4 days inside the "mourning lodge" contemplating life and death and loss culminating in a ritual "grief release" on the fourth night of the installation, at sundown. At the Open Studio of the Intergenerational LGBT Artist Residency, Alec will show documentation of the creation of the lodge and ritual tools, and of the ritual itself. Please visit him in Studio 7.

MICHA CARDENAS is a performer, writer, PhD candidate in Media Arts Practice iMAP at University of Southern California and a member of the art collective Electronic Disturbance Theater 2.0. She will be performing and showing excerpts from her ongoing transreal /science fiction poetry, performance and interactive series, Redshift and Portalmetal, which considers the intersections of trans experience, diaspora, migration and decolonization. Please visit her in Studio C1.

DEREK DUNLOPs practice is concerned with the tradition of queer abstraction in relationship to painting and drawing. His work explores an ethics of representation grounded in process, materiality, and affect. During open studios, Derek will be presenting a series of watercolours and drawings on found paper exploring mediated gestures, repetition, and erasure. Please visit him in Studio 7.

JOSHUA VETTIVELU considers task oriented art activity as a mutatable strategy, which is both applied to and informed by various sculptural materials. They perform ongoing tasks as a way to think through internalized narratives of power. During the residency they will be utilizing Artscape Gibraltar's beach to build temporary structures out of sand. As the structures collapse, new ones will be built, in an ongoing negotiation with the landscape. Please visit them in the Shadowlands Studio and on the Gibraltar Point beach.

SYRUS MARCUS WARE will be experimenting and creating some mixed-media performance: large scale live drawing, painting and intermittent performance exploring identity, memory and resistance. Please visit him in the Shadowlands studio.
