Of Whales and Willpower: The Jamaican Jonah

Of Whales and Willpower: The Jamaican Jonah is an evening of rarely heard Jamaican and West Indian classical music presented by the Apocryphonia Concert Series at Christ Church Deer Park on Friday, June 12 at 7:00 p.m.

The program features over six Canadian premieres, including excerpts from Jonah (1775) by Samuel Felsted, Jamaica’s first classical composer and creator of the first oratorio written in the West Indies.

Performed by Jamaican-Canadian organist Joshua Duncan Lee alongside tenors Paul Williamson and Alexander Cappellazzo, the concert explores over two centuries of Caribbean classical music heritage through works by Samuel Felsted, Noel Da Costa, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Rashaan Rori Allwood, Ted Runcie, and Craig Alistair Bloomfield.
