ANGUISH - 1987
An ophthalmologist’s assistant with an unhealthy interest in human eyeballs goes on a killing spree to collect eyeballs for his overbearing mother’s collection. Reality soon takes a bizarre turn, both for the characters and the audience.
Before director Bigas Luna became known for his brand of peculiar sex comedies (JAMÓN, JAMÓN and GOLDEN BALLS), he assaulted the audience with this hypnotic and disorienting blast of funhouse horror. Zelda Rubinstein (POLTERGEIST) and Michael Lerner (BARTON FINK) give truly unhinged performances as a deranged mother and son team, lashing out against the world. The less you know going into this film the better, except that it’s a truly unique cinematic experience.
