About Batch 0008:

This album began as a set of sound experiments as I was building pieces of my Serge system. With each new modules or panel, I spent time trying to understand its possibilities, limits, and edges. From these experiments I learned techniques for what Serge calls “patch programming”, using the patching of the instrument to specify what each component is meant to do in that specific context. For this collection of pieces, I used patching as the sole means of sequencing and composing the music.

The music here is the result of a process of experimentation and refinement, steadily pushed forward by Martin at SM-LL, providing essential feedback and reference points along the way that helped me arrive at the sound of this record. I wanted to play with the raw electronic sound of the Serge but still make pieces that hold together as compositions and are unique from one another.

About the performers:

New Tendencies

New Tendencies is the ongoing project of musician, artist, and designer Matt Nish-Lapidus. Matt’s work explores sound, place making, technology, abstraction, and transformation across different media and contexts including performance, curation, and installation. He is based in Toronto, Canada.

naw

naw has been composing, performing and releasing electronic music for over 30 years. His interest in sound and technology has led him to a continued questioning and refinement of audio tools and modes of production resulting in experimentation with altered instruments, modified devices and custom software environments. naw’s music is warm, atmospheric and cinematic. With sound design firmly grounded in the traditions of dub studio culture alongside the more formal style of contemporary electroacoustic composition. naw also tips his hat to many other experimental and electronic music school predecessors that have influenced his work from Germany, the UK, USA and his home country of Canada, naw’s music defies classification. Find some of naw’s most recent music both as naw and as part of the post-rock trio Whisper Room on Canada’s Paper Plus Sound and Consouling Sounds from Belgium.
