New Music Concerts presents A Portrait of Jorg Widmann

New Music Concerts (Robert Aitken, founding artistic director) is pleased to welcome the renowned German composer, conductor and instrumentalist Jörg Widmann back to Toronto. Then a rising-star, Widmann’s music was first presented in this city at a wildly successful New Music Concerts event in October, 2005. Since then his career has continued to flourish and he is much in demand as both a classical clarinetist and the celebrated composer of six operas, more than a dozen orchestral works and a myriad of chamber compositions.

Among his numerous chamber works Widmann considers Freie Stücke (2002) to be his most important. Widmann will conduct the Canadian premiere of this large ensemble work which includes, among a host of other things, slide whistle doubles for trumpet and bassoon, and bass and contrabass clarinetists playing kettle drums. Freie Stücke will provide the centerpiece for NMC’s presentation, along with two more premieres, the witty Dubairische Tänze for 18 instruments written in 2009 after a month long stay in Dubai and the wryly lyrical mixed octet Liebeslied. The concert also includes some virtuosic solo works including Air for solo horn performed by Chris Gongos. Widmann will be featured in Fantasie for solo clarinet and will be joined by Gregory Oh in Fünf Bruchstücke for clarinet and piano.
