Nash the Slash Meets Nosferatu & Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Gary Topp presents Toronto music legend Nash the Slash and the Double Bill from Hell. Not seen or heard in over a decade, the recorded scores of Nash the Slash with two infamous silent horror classics-Nosferatu & Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in one spellbinding, mind-blowing double bill.

Legendary musician and electronic instrumentalist Nash the Slash composed and played to Nosferatu (1922) and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), arguably the two most famous horror films of the German Expressionist movement. The filmmakers used skewed sets, painted shadows, and stark lighting to show a distorted inner reality that meshed perfectly with what Nash was trying to do.

Nosferatu is nothing less than a filmed nightmare, with heavy uses of shadows and light to create a distortion of reality that feels emotionally oppressive. Directed by F.W. Murnau, this unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula introduced Max Schreck as the iconic, rodent-like Count Orlok.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene, and starring Conrad Veidt is a nightmarish fever dream featuring jagged sets, and twisted perspective to tell the strange tale of a hypnotist and his murderous sleepwalker.

Toronto based NASH THE SLASH composed the musical scores for these and several other classic silent films and would perform them live at each screening. He was a legendary Canadian multi-instrumentalist adept at electric violin and mandolin. Nash was also the first Canadian to ever use a drum machine on an album, while his music was a complex blend of prog, art rock, new wave and performance art. He started performing as a solo artist beginning in 1975 and founded the progressive rock band FM in 1976. His trademark look was covered in surgical bandages. NASH THE SLASH sadly passed away in May 2014 but his work and legacy lives on through this event.
