material disobedience
material disobedience is an immersive showcase of contemporary craft practices that reclaim and revel in what has been minimized as the frivolously feminine, the scandalously queer, or the exotically ornamental.
Rhinestones, beads, crystals, embroidery, textiles, and ceramics have all been variously perceived as symbols of “excessive” cultures or lifestyles, an association that has reinforced creative hierarchies and trivialized marginalized identities. By centering these materials, the artists entwine visual pleasures with critical analysis of labour, gender, and colonialism. What’s more, they exemplify the rich possibilities of craft art as a discipline, showcasing works ranging from sculpture, embroidery, weavings, ceramics and AR video.
material disobedience will be on view from May 30 to June 20, 2026 at The Lost & Found Project Space (420 Queen St E). Featuring artists Théo Bignon (QC), Molly JF Caldwell (AB), Lux Gow-Habrich (ON), and Hea R. Kim (QC). Curated by Madeline Collins (ON).
