Makam Nights with Sar Kamler - Armenian Duduk

Taking place at the Tranzac, this monthly gathering provides a space for learning and sharing modal music.

This issue features Armenian Duduk player, Sar Kamler. Kamler brings jazz and classical performance technique alongside traditional Armenian repertoire.

For those unfamiliar with the duduk, it is a 1,200-year-old double reeded woodwind instrument native to Armenia. With its warm, soft, slightly nasal timbre that parallels the human voice, the duduk speaks to audiences across all cultural boundaries.

Since 2019, Kamler has captivated Toronto audiences through groundbreaking collaborations, including the "Armenia Meets Cuba" project with world renowned jazz pianist Hilario Duran and his ongoing "Café Duduk" duo with pianist Viktor Kott.

We are looking forward to hearing Kamler push the duduk beyond its traditional boundaries. Come listen to this special instrument:
