A LORD OF ILLUSIONS / IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS Double-Bill

Halloween is around the corner and after last year's mind-blowing 35mm Double-Bill of THE BEYOND and PIECES, fans of the Carlton Midnight Society have been pondering an obvious question -- how the hell are these guys going to top that event? Well folks, we're happy to announce that not only have we topped last year's extravaganza but we're doing it in the most spellbinding and horrific way possible - a double-bill of Clive Barker's LORD OF ILLUSIONS and John Carpenter's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS that we're calling ILLUSIONS OF LOVECRAFT.

H.P. Lovecraft's work can best be described in the following sentence, "I've just seen the most terrifying thing in my entire life, but I can't tell you what it is. The end." Needless to say, that's not much for filmmakers to go on and as such there has been a laundry list of failed adaptations with the odd notable exception, namely Stuart Gordon's famous RE-ANIMATOR.

It's ironic then, that the two best "adaptations" of H.P. Lovecraft's work came in the form of two horror films by two titans of horror Clive Barker and John Carpenter that are original works not based on anything by Lovecraft whatsoever!

Using Lovecraftian imagery and themes inspired by some of Lovecraft's finest stories, LORD OF ILLUSIONS and IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS are both excellent examples of intelligent, thought-provoking horror populated by three-dimensional characters and a sense of dread that straddles the fine line between fantasy and reality.

Clive Barker's LORD OF ILLUSIONS 1995 kicks things off at 9:00 PM followed by John Carpenter's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS 1994 at 11:30 PM. Please note that we will be screening the DIRECTOR'S CUT of LORD OF ILLUSIONS, which Clive Barker has stated on record is his preferred cut of the film.

There's a lot of competition out there fighting for your Halloween dollars, but let's be honest folks, who else is offering you a chance to see two underappreciated efforts by two titans of horror back-to-back on the BIG SCREEN? And did we mention that DR. ROBERT ING THE PARANORMALIST will be performing OCCULT FEATS OF ILLUSION before the event? Do the right thing and make it a point to spend Saturday, October 22nd at the Carlton with your friends at the Midnight Society!
