Born on the Cape Verdean island of Santiago, Elida Almeida lived in her grandparents’ home in rural Matinho, and learned to sing at church. Her first album Ora doci Ora margos (Sweet Times Bitter Times), featured folk melodies enhanced by Santiago beats (batuque, funana and morna) and the subtle arrangements of guitarist Hernani Almeida, and saw European release soon after being released domestically. The album garnered a 2015 Découvertes RFI prize, a major world-music award whose jury that year was chaired by Malian superstar Oumou Sangaré.
