After the collapse of his unrealized DUNE project, Jodorowsky completely changed course, relocating to India to write and direct TUSK (1980). Adapted from Reginald Campbell's novel "Poo Lorn of the Elephants", the film explores the soulmate relationship between a young British woman living in India and an elephant born on the same day as her. The subtle quiet film exhibited little of the director's outlandish visual style and flourishes, baffling critics and fans of his earlier works. TUSK has never been made available beyond a rare VHS release, but nonetheless remains a notable touchstone in Jodorowsky’s very diverse career — a breezy low-stakes detour after his years of DUNE troubles, and before “returning to form” with SANTA SANGRE a few years later.

The darkest and strangest of Kevin Smith’s experimental early-2010s period, TUSK (2014) stars Justin Long (𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘯) as a podcaster who travels to Canada to interview an eccentric old seaman about a particular obsession of his. Like Jodorowsky’s film above, Smith’s TUSK baffled critics and fans alike, but has gained and attained a cult following among those likening it to a version of Stephen King’s "Misery" for the podcast generation.

Wednesday April 26th! See you there!
