JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at The Royal Cinema!

SECOND SCREENING: APRIL 16 AT 4:30 PM

Join us for a special Easter screening of the unforgettable biblical musical epic, Jesus Christ Superstar.

We asked friend of The Royal, director Atom Egoyan, why he is a Jesus Christ Superstar fan-atic:

"JSC is definite contender for my desert island film. Think about it. You get to be entertained, have fun, watch Jesus being whipped, crucified and resurrected in glorious TODD AO cinemascope AND sing and dance to one of the catchiest musicals ever written. I know it all by heart. It changed my life. To have those stories from the bible - which I had to learn at school - suddenly come to life as rock opera was mind-blowing. Then to see Norman Jewison cast it so perfectly and move the camera with such amazing dolly shots and have Rob Iscove (ANOTHER Canadian) design the dance numbers with such trippy energy and verve was inspiriting. Enjoy!"

Adapted from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Broadway rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar recounts the last days of Jesus Christ (Ted Neeley) from the perspective of Judas Iscariot (Carl Anderson), his betrayer. As Jesus' following increases, Judas begins to worry that Jesus is falling for his own hype, forgetting the principles of his teachings and growing too close to the prostitute Mary Magdalene (Yvonne Elliman). After Jesus has an outburst in a temple, Judas turns on him.

Neeley and Anderson were nominated for two Golden Globe Awards in 1974 for their portrayals of Jesus and Judas, respectively, and the film remains popular, winning a 2012 Huffington Post competition for "Best Jesus Movie". Join us for this rollicking, wild '70s ride through the bible!
