It's A Wonderful Life
This timeless parable of a destitute banker and his guardian angel was a box office disappointment upon its release in 1946, and has since become a cornerstone of holiday tradition. James Stewart strikes the right balance of wholesome and hopeless as George Bailey, whose suicide is interrupted by a rookie guardian angel looking to earn his wings. Director Frank Capra’s methodical plotting creates an infinitely rewatchable (if a bit dated) morality play, culminating in the ensemble cast’s cathartic rendition of Auld Lang Syne.
