Imaginal Disk

Truth and Dare: Celebrating the most mind-expanding, form-pushing works emerging from the documentary world with a one-of-a-kind, can’t miss event!

In 2024, alt-pop duo Magdalena Bay’s psychedelic synth-pop concept album Imaginal Disk took the internet by storm, ranking highly on several publications' "best of the year" lists. After giving the fans a chance to relish in the album’s mystical sonic universe, the band announced this complete visual album directed by Amanda Kramer: a wizard of artifice, whose film So Unreal screened at Truth and Dare in 2025.

Following the character True, an album surrogate whose body rejects the pre-programming of the titular Imaginal Disk, this multimedia visual album spans centuries of human feeling to visually render the album’s themes of individuality and sentience. Kramer’s affection-laden kitsch is a perfect match for the album’s psychedelic introspection, with no shortage of colourful visual experimentation, making this a piece of pure pop excellence.

The film will be preceded by the Toronto premiere of Skeptics and Believers, a post-ironic tour de force by Toronto comedy trio The Big Three, co-directed by its three members Sam Burns, Nathan Hare and Ben Stager, as well as Blake Hannahson and Eli Spiegel (the former of which directed the short Tasty Morsels, which screened at Truth and Dare earlier this year). Depicting a fateful day at family-owned bar Dead Prophets, this short is a David Wain-esque rumination on faith with such priceless specificity that you’ll be howling through its many twists and turns.

Truth and Dare is thrilled to present this audiovisual vaudeville pair—from alumni directors of the series, no less—so don't miss out on this one-of-a-kind, interactive event, complete with a Q&A with director Amanda Kramer, as well as a live performance from The Big Three.
