How Misinformation Spreads: An former Torontonian and NBC News Reporter on Elections and Foreign Influence
A Toronto Public Library public talk, part of Celebrate Democracy. The library's registration page lists this event as "In Conversation with Jane Lytvynenko."
Jane Lytvynenko is a senior technology reporter at NBC News, covering technology and conflict. Born in Kyiv, she spent more than twenty years in Canada, including time as a reporter and editor at Canadaland. She then spent five years at BuzzFeed News, where she helped pioneer real-time debunking during breaking news. She has since been a senior research fellow at Harvard's Shorenstein Center and co-produced the Peabody- and Emmy-nominated Shadow Men: Inside Wagner, Russia's Secret War Company.
In this live online conversation with Wency Leung of The Local, Jane will look at how misinformation takes hold and spreads, how foreign influence operations work, and the role social media plays in what we think we know. She'll also share practical steps that journalists, community groups and everyday citizens can take to keep our information healthy and our democracy strong.
