HORNY NONSENSE presents John Cameron Mitchell's SHORTBUS
This Pride Month, join Hot Docs and Horny Nonsense for John Cameron Mitchell’s controversial follow-up to Hedwig and the Angry Inch: Shortbus (2006), featuring a live pre-show hosted by Johnnie McNamara Walker (@handsomejohnnie) in conversation with one of the film's stars, Sook-Yin Lee!
Mitchell’s cult classic uses explicit sex scenes not to shock or titillate, but as a medium through which to explore human connection. The film follows an eclectic ensemble of intrepid sex-plorers: a “pre-orgasmic” sex therapist, a gay couple navigating non-monogamy, a misanthropic dominatrix, and all the beautiful weirdos who weave in and out of their lives at the weekly salon the movie is named after; a mad nexus of art, music, politics, and anything-goes pansexuality. With an original score by indie darlings Yo La Tango and a cast including cabaret legend Justin Vivian Bond and Canada’s own Sook-Yin Lee, Shortbus is a love letter to post-9/11 NYC and a time capsule of its early 2000s boho arts scene.
Horny Nonsense is a new film strand at Hot Docs that celebrates, scrutinizes, and laughs along with movies about sex and we cannot think of a better movie for our inaugural screening. Heartwarming, hilarious, and unabashedly horny, Shortbus is the perfect way to kick off your Pride Month.
