PAPER is an audio-visual performance piece that lives in the space shared between music and the visual arts. Featuring new compositions and improvisations by Nahre Sol and Brad Cherwin, PAPER investigates the interplay between gestures that are heard and those that are seen.

The performance will last approximately 25 minutes.

“It rarely happens that a recital series strikes excellence in programming from the word go, but … clarinetist Brad Cherwin, [and pianist] Nahre Sol … are doing just that. Next time these people throw a recital, run don’t walk.” (Lydia Perovic, Definitely the Opera)

Happenstance is a Toronto-based concert series and ensemble, formed in 2016 and now beginning its third season. The series is the shared effort of Co-Artistic Directors Nahre Sol and Brad Cherwin. Together, they form the core band of Happenstance.

Featuring a rotating cast of guest artists, from organizations such as the Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestras and Contact Contemporary Music, they perform in and produce concerts that attach a visionary narrative to adventurous repertoire, creating a compelling atmosphere in which audiences can both approach and appreciate challenging artistic programming.

With a knack for combining cutting-edge contemporary repertoire with expressive works from the traditional canon, their concerts feature "an obscene amount of talent" (The WholeNote) and have been hailed as “bizarrely eclectic, ... very intriguing and rewarding” (John Gilks, operaramblings).

Nahre is the inaugural recipient of the New Music Fellowship and Brad is a Rebanks Fellow at The Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory of Music.

Happenstance presents its 2018-2019 season with the generous support of the Toronto Arts Council.
