“Whack”: strike forcefully with a sharp blow
Whacking also known as waacking is rooted from punking. Whacking started in the 1970’s in Los Angeles’ gay clubs by Black, Latino and Asian gay men as a form of self expression. It was influenced by Hollywood silent films and cartoons such as Looney Toons and the original Batman series. The dance faded in 1980’s and 1990’s. Whacking started to resurge in the mid 2000’s, when Brian Green began to teach the dance to provoke the whacking elders to share with the new generation.
Striking, arms rolls, arm pathways and posing are some of the movement associated with Whacking.
