Dido Elizabeth Belle was the daughter of a British naval captain and an African slave who grew up to become a prominent abolitionist in late 18th century London – breaking barriers of race, class and gender. Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s breakout performance – ably supported by Sarah Gadon as Dido’s cousin Elizabeth Murray – makes this historical drama feel entirely contemporary.
