Forro Roots Weekend Toronto - Brazilian Dance
The Toronto dance community is set to host the city's inaugural Forró Roots Weekend on July 11–12, 2026, marking the exclusive first stop of a multi-city Canadian tour that will continue on to Montreal and Quebec City.
Held at the newly opened Tempo Dance Collective (1610A Bloor St W), the intensive weekend brings world-class international instruction directly to Ontario. The event features specialized workshops led by guest instructor Julie Médous from the acclaimed São Paulo-based project, Viajando Pelo Roots.
Forró Roots represents a contemporary, sensitive, and deeply interactive approach to partner dance. Characterized by intricate legwork, a strong emphasis on musicality, and a nuanced physical connection, the style is grounded in traditional Forró pé de serra while seamlessly weaving in structural elements drawn from Forró de Itaúnas, Samba de Gafieira, and Tango. It functions as a living language, constantly transforming within global social dance communities.
The Toronto edition of this international workshop series is organized by local journalist and cultural producer Raquel Camargo.
