Fleurs de tranchees

Music of Maurice Ravel and Albéric Magnard. The involvement of the two composers in the global conflict was very different. Ravel, a pacifist sensitive to the ideas of Jean Jaurès, tried to join the war effort despite being refused by the military authorities. He managed to do a brief stint in 1916 but was decommissioned in 1917. Magnard was also excluded from the war effort because of his age (he was 49 in 1914) but died on September 3, 1914, defending his house against the German invaders.

Concert by the Des Équilibres ensemble, with Agnès Pyka (violin) and Laurent Wagschal (piano).
