Artist Talk: Friday, October 24, 6:00 7:00 PM

Opening Reception: Friday, October 24, 7:00 - 9:00 PM 12

Exhibitions on view from October 24 - November 22

Open Studio is pleased to present the 2013-14 Scholarship / Fellowship Exhibitions, featuring artists Hazel Eckert Nick Novak Fellowship and Annyen Lam Don Phillips Scholarship. Each year, Open Studio provides artists working in print media with both professional support and access to studio facilities to create new work during a one-year residency. Both artists will give talks about their work on Friday, October 24 at 6 pm at Open Studio, followed by an opening reception. As Toronto-based artist and writer Kristie MacDonald points out in the accompanying essay, although the work featured in these exhibitions is quite different, a common thread between them is the way in which Eckert and Lam both approach paper as a curiosity, exploring the inherent qualities of paper and how they might be highlighted or transformed.

Hazel Eckert: Traces

Nick Novak Fellowship Exhibition

Hazel Eckerts Traces focuses on her work with collage and ephemera. The works are fragmented, self-referential pieces made with found textures and readymade colours. She is fascinated by the gradual deterioration and alteration of image quality as an object or source image is subjected to successive methods of reproduction.

Annyen Lam: Wayfinding

Don Phillips Scholarship Exhibition

Combining printmaking with hand-cut paper, Annyen Lams Wayfinding explores the mutable characteristics of perception in relation to ones experiences with the natural world. Drawing from personal histories of escapism through imagination, Lam creates two- and three-dimensional paper works of fictitious environments while investigating the sculptural possibilities of paper.
