Domo's Basics of Photography!

A playful beginner-friendly photography workshop with Toronto photographer Ian Lawrence

Ever wondered how some travel photos instantly feel exciting, cinematic, emotional, or memorable? In this fun and approachable workshop, photographer Ian Lawrence will break down the basics of photography using images from his CONTACT Photography Festival exhibition Domo To Go — a globe-spanning photo series following the adventures of the beloved character Domo Kun through Iceland, Paris, Thailand, and beyond.

Designed especially for beginners, aspiring photographers, travellers, and creatives, this workshop will introduce foundational photography concepts in a relaxed and inspiring way. Together, we’ll explore how photographers use composition, framing, balance, colour, scale, perspective, timing, and storytelling to create stronger and more engaging images — whether using a smartphone or a dedicated camera.

Using real examples from the Domo To Go series, Ian will demonstrate how the Elements and Principles of Design can transform ordinary snapshots into photographs that feel intentional, expressive, and visually compelling. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the local area and take photos of their own using their smartphone or camera, with their own stuffie or toy as the subject against the exciting backdrop of downtown Toronto, followed by a short friendly group critique and discussion.

No technical experience required — just curiosity and a love of photography, travel, or creativity.
