Withnail & I

Our annual miserable January screening is back! With ice in the cider.

Because the only thing more desolate than January in Toronto is the English countryside in Withnail & I. By all the natural laws of science, chemistry and logic, the titular anti-hero of this dark 1987 comedy should not make it through the movie. But Withnail's not just anyone: He’s an out-of-work part-time actor and full-time alcoholic. He and his roommate hope to escape the squalor of their London flat at a cottage in the Lake District (belonging to lascivious Uncle Monty). Naturally, the inhospitable and bone-chilling English damp follows them on holiday. Bruce Robinson’s blackly comic masterpiece is a rueful coda of friendship and 1960s disillusionment—hilarious, poignant and almost unbearably melancholy.
