Crossroads: Community Design In-Person Brainstorm

Join STEPS and Community-engaged Artist, Kseniya Tsoy for a set of cumulative mural design ideation sessions to share your stories, traditions and ideas to co-create this community-inspired legacy mural to highlight both our individual histories, and the common threads that bind us.

This workshop series is hosted by STEPS Public Art and Kseniya Tsoy. It is open to members of the North York Willowdale community & anyone interested in sharing their stories to co-create this dynamic legacy mural. All materials provided!

About the Project:

Crossroads is a site-specific community-engaged mural project led by Artist Kseniya Tsoy (@al.fergani) in partnership with STEPS Public Art. This project will explore the unique cultural tapestry of Willowdale as a meeting place of global perspectives and cultural lineages while honouring the Indigenous lands we gather on today.

Through a blend of cultural myths, legends, and folk motifs from around the world as shared by community members, Crossroads will become a 360° wrap-around mural flowing across the walls of the TTC Finch Station’s entrance on Yonge Street.

About the Workshop Series:

Intended as a cumulative experience, each workshop will build on the one before it. Ideas, themes, and stories collected at each session will be built into the cumulative community rendering, to be shared and reflected on in each session, with Kseniya will lead us through creative conversations and exercises to bring our ideas to life.

We invite community members from diverse backgrounds to share their stories, traditions and ideas to co-create this community-inspired legacy mural.

Each workshop session will be 90 minutes in length.

Register for both for the full experience by February 8, 2023!

About the Artist:

Kseniya Tsoy (@al.fergani) is a community-engaged mural artist and a recipient of the Newcomer Arts Award 2021 from Toronto Arts Foundation.

As a person of mixed heritage, cultural diversity has always been the inspiration behind her work. Her personal murals are dedicated to visual exploration of complex cultural identities and are inspired by folk motifs from diverse cultures that have influenced her growing up. As a community-engaged artist, she is best known for her whimsical collaborative murals where community members are engaged in all stages of the creative process.

Crossroads is a project of deep personal meaning to Kseniya and was born out of the artist’s cultural connection to the Willowdale neighbourhood. Through this work, she hopes to engage with the local community to co-create a legacy mural that speaks to diverse residents of Willowdale, as she strongly believes that #RepresentationMatters.
