Corktown Ukulele Jam

This unique weekly event has become is the crown jewel of Toronto's vibrant ukulele scene. Steve McNie produces a buttoned down, three part program that begins with a 90 minute workshop centred around 2 songs - an easier one, followed by one more challenging. The thing is, he navigates through the challenges in a way that engages players of all abilities. The only caveat, he says, is that the event does not cater to absolute beginners. For that he produces a three-hour "UKE 101" that will give you enough grounding to prep your introduction to the magic that gets made.

The workshop is followed by an open stage and a group jam on songs participants have voted on in advance from an extensive online song book. Everything the group is projected to a large screen to avoid the distraction of paper and music stands.

"Video puts us all on the same page", smiles McNie. "There's no ambiguity of who is playing what and when. That way we can focus on groove, style, nuance and the MUSIC within the song we're in. Music is ultimately about expression."

And the touch a lot of musical bases. McNie is emphatic about the humble uke. "You, know, there's not a single style of music we've encountered that the ukulele doesn't offer justice to." His first instrument is the cello. "I see the ukulele through exactly the same lens I see the uke. As a wonderfully powerful facilitator of connection to heart, soul - and community."
