Come learn how to make a hand bound Coptic style book! Dating back to the 2nd century A.D., Coptic bindings are a flexible and exciting book structure with a lot of creative potential. Complete with hard covers on the front and back, but with exposed sewing on the spine – which is both structural and decorative. Coptic books are ideal notebooks or sketchbooks, because they are able to open completely flat to any page.

Participants will learn how to prepare cover boards and signatures (groups of pages), then sew everything together into a sturdy and useful book.

About Liam:

A recent graduate of OCAD University’s Sculpture & Installation program, Blackburn’s practice is varied. He works in metal, wood and the fibre arts, and his practice includes metal casting, hand-forging, weaving, spinning, dyework, papermaking and bookbinding. Blackburn is interested in what can arise from the cross pollination of skill sets and perspectives on making at the intersection – or with the coexistence – of craft and fine art.
