"Traversing boundaries of space and creativity, especially when you grow up in a small traditional city in Iran famous for its strict adherence to religious practices, can become a challenge for any artist regardless of gender. Kashan, the city that I began to develop as an artist, is precisely the kind of place where it is difficult to move beyond the distinct sense of gendered identities and traditional community values. However, women always have their own approaches to finding and establishing new ways of expressing their voices and influences within patriarchal communities."

Listen to Leila's life stories about meticulous Iranian craftsmanship by women makers and how she draws parallels to contemporary colouring patterns and trends. Leila is currently working on a coloring book inspired by the Persian designs, the kind of patterns that would offer creative therapeutic experience through echoes of traditional symmetry and color unity.
