Brazilian play explores social anxiety at Toronto Fringe Festival

UNDER THE COVER

A feeling we all know.

Under the Cover is a deeply personal theatre work inspired by actress Camila Linhares’s lived experiences with social anxiety. Developed through writing, improvisation, and the exploration of real memories, the piece seeks to give theatrical form to the often invisible inner experiences that shape everyday social interactions.

Written by Izabella Vaz, performed by Camila Linhares, and directed by Barbara de la Fuente and Priscila Paes, the production is created, led, and produced by Brazilian women artists. Embracing a minimalist aesthetic, the work allows storytelling, physical expression, and emotional honesty to take centre stage. Through an intimate and embodied performance, Under the Cover explores themes of vulnerability, connection, belonging, and the complexities of being human.

The work first premiered at the Hamilton Fringe Festival in 2024. The current version is a substantially reimagined adaptation, reflecting an ongoing evolution of its themes, structure, and performance language.

Under the Cover invites audiences into a shared space of reflection and recognition, offering a moving and intimate experience that lingers long after the performance ends.
