Bizet's Carmen
Benevolence Opera Project and the Redwood Theatre present Fast Times in Seville and Cursed in Mantua
The weekend opens with Bizet’s fiery and irresistible Carmen, featuring Ukrainian-Canadian soprano Alexandra Beley in the iconic title role.
Tenor Adam Luther takes on Don José before returning the following evening as the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto — one of several artists pulling double duty across this unique weekend.
Baritone Johnathon Kirby brings his charisma to the swaggering toreador Escamillo,. Kcenia Koutorjevski and Nadine Anyan take on Mercédès and Frasquita, with Cameron Mazzei and Sebastian Belcourt appearing as the smugglers Remendado and Dancaïro. Michaela will be sung by soprano, Angela Gjurichanin.
Benevolence Opera Project founder and producer Ryan Hofman serves as host for the evening, helping guide audiences through Bizet’s story and bringing BOP’s signature accessible approach to one of opera’s most famous works.
At the helm of Carmen is soprano and director Holly Chaplin, who will undertake a remarkable double assignment of her own: directing Friday evening’s production before stepping onto the Redwood stage Saturday night to sing Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto.
Brahm Goldhamer serves as Musical Director for Carmen.
Together, Carmen will offer audiences an evening built around some of opera’s most recognizable and exhilarating music — all experienced just feet away from the performers in the intimate surroundings of The Redwood Theatre.
