Derrick Carter plays parties, makes music, dances, sings—and really, really likes shoes. A pivotal figure in Chicago house music’s ’90s wave, he began DJ’ing at age nine, spinning disco at family reunions. Growing up in the city’s western suburbs, Carter was drawn into Chicago’s underground dance scene in his teens and quickly became a major presence. After honing his skills for years, he eventually took his tight, soulful sets on the road, working at record stores like Gramaphone and spinning at legendary local venues like Shelter, Foxy’s, and Smart Bar. He travels around the world as a house music icon; his sound is rooted in house but never confined by it—Carter’s sets often weave in disco, soul, jazz, and anything else that moves the room.
