After iconic Canadian discount chain Zellers shuttered its last store in 2020, following more widespread closures in 2013 and the years that followed, the nostalgic memories that came with accompanying one's parent to the shop while they partook in what felt like centuries' worth of errands are increasingly fading from memory.
But, as is the case with nostalgia, certain aspects of the Zellers experience have taken root in a part of the collective Canadian subconscious in a way that not even time can erode. What the now-extinct ball pit was to IKEA, the Zellers diner (known at different times as The Skillet or the Zellers Family Restaurant) was to the department store.
Flooded with fluorescent lights, the in-store restaurants first appeared in the '60s, growing in number as the chain reached its peak fleet size in the '90s. Cohesive with Zellers' larger mission, the restaurant offered affordable diner staples for shoppers and their antsy kids.
The signature Big Z Burger, club sandwiches, onion rings, milkshakes and hot gravy chicken sandwiches were all among the restaurant's surprisingly varied options before the widespread dissolution of the chain caused the last remaining locations to close down.
But as Zellers embarks on a return to Ontario, so too will the diner make a comeback, albeit in a new form.
To celebrate the opening of the newest Toronto Zellers location at 80 Orfis Rd., the retailer is planning a nostalgic celebration of epic proportions, including, most importantly, a Zellers Diner on Wheels, serving all the retro staples you've almost forgotten.
From Thursday, June 18, through Sunday, June 21, the Zellers Diner on Wheels will be serving the Big Z Burger, hot gravy chicken sandwich, chicken fingers, grilled cheese, fries with gravy and more at the new location.
To supplement the celebration, the store will also boast a 25-ft. inflatable version of Zellers' mascot, Zeddy Bear, equally reminiscent kiddie rides and giveaways.
The Zellers Diner on Wheels will operate from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. You can also expect it to make an appearance at future Zellers store openings, wherever they may happen next.
