Toronto soul food restaurant closes months after reopening and has already been replaced

Just months after a beloved Toronto soul food joint made its epic comeback, the restaurant has closed once again, and it's already been replaced by something entirely different.

It was the sort of fairytale news that Toronto foodies dream of: in the spring of 2025, local soul food institution, Harlem, announced it would soon reopen after a lengthy eight-year closure.

Come the summer, the restaurant was open again, and the community of fans who never really managed to get over its original closure returned in droves like the restaurant had never been gone at all.

The excitement was particularly palpable because it spoke to a more hopeful future in a city whose businesses have been steadily battered at the whim of a recessive economy and non-stop, relentless demolition.

If Harlem could make a comeback, what other defunct favourites could have a second chance at thriving?

Well, unfortunately for Harlem and its many fans, the comeback ultimately proved remarkably brief. In late 2025, the restaurant closed down again, leaving behind a heartfelt message on its website, referring customers to its owners' other ventures.

Within the first week of January 2026, the restaurant space had already been handed over to new owners and, by the end of the month, Harlem's usurper, a Mexican restaurant called Agave Azul, was open for business.

Though the cuisine on offer is a major departure from Harlem's, Agave Azul maintains Harlem's restaurant-and-nightlife-spot model, boasting "brunch, dinner [and] fiesta" in its Instagram bio.

Under colourful lights, diners can choose from a small-but-mighty menu of Mexican plates like guacamole with chicharron, pozole, tostadas and, of course, nachos, before the party ramps up later in the evening, with DJs taking over the playlist and the dance floor opening up.

It's always sad to see an old favourite go, but it certainly softens the blow when something equally fun replaces it.

And, who knows, if Harlem was able to come back for a victory lap, however brief, once, maybe it'll be able to do it again. There are plenty of fans who've stood by the institution over the years who'd be ready to welcome it back with open arms.

Agave Azul is located at 745 Queen St. W.
