Various brands of bagels recalled in Ontario due to 'pieces of metal'

Canadians are being urged to check if they purchased bagels that are part of a nationwide recall due to pieces of metal.

On December 4, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that it recalled several brands of bagels due to "extraneous material." The recall is in effect for Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Ontario, and Saskatchewan.

Affected brands include Bigway, Co-op, Super A, and TGP. According to the CFIA, the recall is related to a previous announcement recalling a brand of salt used in several products.

"Various brands of bagels recalled due to pieces of metal," reads the statement. "This recall is linked to Sifto brand Hy·Grade Salt recalled due to pieces of metal, as the affected salt was used to make these recalled products."

"Packed on" dates printed on the packaging are from November 4, 2024, to November 27, 2024.

And it's not just bagels.

The recalled salt was also used in several food products by Stuyver's, Country Harvest, D'Italiano, Giant Value, Griffith Foods, Deli World, Les Croissants d'Olivier Ltd., Bakestone Brothers, Foodtastic, Grimm's PBF Pita Bread Factory Ltd., Western Family, No Name, President's Choice, Wonder, and McCain.

The recall has been categorized as a class 2, which means that there's "a moderate risk that consuming the food may lead to short-term or non-life-threatening health problems."

So far, the CFIA hasn't reported any injuries.

"Do not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected products," warns the agency.

Most recalls are voluntary, and the CFIA sees around 160 recalls yearly. You can check the product code to determine if your purchase is part of the recall.
