Back to ring in another Lunar New Year, Holt Renfrew is celebrating the Year of the Dragon in style and sophistication at the Holts Café Bloor Street offering an afternoon tea experience you won't want to miss.
Commemorate the spirit of a traditional tea every Thursday through Sunday starting Saturday, Jan. 27, and running until Sunday, March 3, and treat yourself to a unique chef-curated menu that showcases customary Lunar New Year offerings.
The ideal way to ring in the new year with friends and family, every afternoon tea will be an unforgettable experience with some special surprises you'll have to discover in person.
Offered at $78 per person, here’s what you can expect to have at Holts Café's Lunar New Year Afternoon Tea in Toronto.
Beginning with savoury bites to get your tea time started right, Holt Renfrew Executive Chef Malcolm Webster has outdone himself with a range of dishes to adorn the tea tower.
"I wanted to put a spin on the classic Afternoon Tea experience with items like the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings and Crab Wontons," Holts Café Executive Chef Malcolm Webster tells blogTO. "You don’t find these on many afternoon tea menus and I felt it was a creative and fun way to celebrate the festival.”
Indulge in a Crystal Shrimp Dumpling along with a Crab Wonton flavoured with yuzu kosho aioli, cilantro, avocado, and dashi jelly. There’s also a delectable Five-spiced Roasted Pork Bao with pops of green onion, pickled daikon, and carrot, served along with a hoisin mayonnaise.
And what’s an afternoon tea without a finger sammie? The menu includes a Cucumber Tea Sandwich featuring herb cream cheese on a delightfully soft matcha shokupan bread that’ll make for a perfect bite while you sip away the afternoon.
The perfect companion to any tea party, each menu will come with sweet scones made in-house, packed full of vibrant flavours.
This year features divine Matcha & Buttermilk Scones served with a healthy dollop of house-made strawberry jam and Devonshire clotted cream.
There’s always room for dessert, and on this menu, you’re going to want to save room for it all!
Partake in a Mandarin Orange Choux with orange cremeux and white chocolate, along with a Matcha Tiramisu or a Sesame Ball filled with pickled ginger and lotus seed paste.
Top off your dessert with the Good Fortune Macaron — flavoured with Hong Kong milk tea this year.
"We got so much great feedback last year on the Sesame Ball, so I decided to bring it back with a new filling," says Chef Malcom. "They’re such a classic Lunar New Year item, we hope our guests will love them.”
