Cosmos West Records

Cosmos West RecordsCosmos West Records is one of the two Cosmos stores that bookend Bathurst Street; the one on the east side came first, and this one followed when the owner discovered that he had far too much stock for one small storefront. The result is that the old school rap and R&B is on the east side, while the rare jazz, blues, Cuban and Brazilian music - a truly impressive selection of the latter - is found here. Classic rock - making an unexpected comeback - is for sale in booth, so you need never go without Emerson, Lake & Palmer records again.

Ari is a nice guy but his used vinyl is way way overpriced and terribly graded. If you want to pay more than NM prices for VG or worse condition vinyl, go to Cosmos. if you want real quality used vinyl, wait until you find it at Around Again or another good store, or get acquainted with the better Ebay dealers. Cosmos pays a pittance for used vinyl and marks it up shockingly with little regard to condition. Frustrating at best.

I agree wholeheartedly with the first post by Robert. Just came back from the newest location of the west store which they were still in the process of sorting and restocking everything from boxes.

I dug through a couple creates and found a couple of records that I was interested in and queried the price and was quoted $8 and $30!! I was like WTF?!? Keep in mind, I pulled these out of a create that also contained smelly moldy records and these records were in beaten up sleeves and didn't even have paper liners protecting the records. Grading of the media was at best was VG and most likely G+. I asked why the one record for $30 was so expensive, especially considering the condition, and was told that it was "rare" and OOP The record in question was "Round Two" on "Main Street Records" I already knew that this record is widely available as it's never been out of print because the guys at HardWax/Basic Channel always send out a steady stream of pressings thus there is no first, second, third prints.... This record can be bought brand new for $11 folks and when I told they guy that quoted me $30, he responded, it has to be a bootleg.... Not only is he trying to rip me off, but now he's spewing bullshit.

That beaten up not cared for record is prob worth $3-4 at most and that is being generous for it's care and condition. I would have even paid $5-6 for it because I understand it's a record store and they have to pay their bills and overhead and all that, but $30 is near extortion IMHO.

Come on Cosmo, honest, get your act straight. I wish I could support your store but I'm really not interested in ever setting foot back in your store after this because you're trying to rip people off and when people challenge it, made up bullshit is used to defend your prices. Disappointing to say the least. Good luck in your future en devours.

We have our entire collection for sale, in amazing condition, mostly 1970s rock. Treated like gold and many in special plastic sleeves. Some rare albums (not on amazon.com)

How can we find a buyer that will value these GOOD records?

I can't speak to anyone else's experiences, but one day last year I went in there and came out with an original Canadian mono pressing of The Beatles' "Yesterday....and Today". It was priced at $45. He charged me $40, tax included, just because I said "Well, I try not to spend that much usually..." When I got home and put it on I almost had to stick my face in a bucket of ice before I could truly believe I hadn't bought a brand new record. I can't believe it wasn't still shrinkwrapped when I bought it, and I'm doubtful that it was ever played even once. It should have said "mint" on the label. It didn't. It....was.....just.......PERFECT. Never before or since have I experienced such a moment of REVERENCE towards a shopping experience, vinyl or otherwise. Just for that, I'll forgive 'em for the time the wrong record turned up in the sleeve when I got it home. Hey, I might've bought the one I got anyway. And it was four bucks.

These guys have amazing records, but the prices here are 2-3 times higher than the prices I see on discogs or ebay. The stores are not very organized, as they recently got some big collection from the States.

They also pay very little attention to the condition of records. It seems that they charge full price for any record in any subpar condition, and a premium on the full price if the record is actually clean.

If you want rare records, this is the place, but be prepared bring your rent money to buy them.

Buyers beware.

Way too over priced ... the records are all beat up. The ones that are clean cost double what they're worth.

Nice guys work there, but I'm not going back as the 12" I purchased skipped when I got it home. I paid $30 for it, and just bought another copy on discogs for $5.

I got hosed :(

The owner was very friendly and knowledgeable, but you need to be rich to go to this store. $200 for a beatles lp?

No thank you.

The owner is not overly knowledgeable about music. He knows about records that he can make a lot of money on. He over values just about everything.

The owner says Goldmine, EBay sellers, etc don't know what they're talking about and that his prices are the true prices. It's bullshit justification for his over priced records.

The owner of this store buys on EBay and sells at hugely marked up prices locally. Do some research, you can get the same records elsewhere.

The records he gets from the US are often beaten to crap, called rare when they're not. It's like everything is from a personal collection. Don't believe that for a moment.

He'll often do cash deals - but he'll never cut you a discount.

If you need it in a hurry and he has it, go for it, otherwise, I highly suggest waiting for a better copy at a better price.

Good salesman, nice guy - that's why you end up paying too much.
