Sushi Island

Posted by Staff / Reviewed on January 28, 2008

Sushi Island
Sushi Island in Little Italy is popular for their all you can eat sushi deals. If you can get past all the complicated rules (such as everyone at the table needs to order the same thing; or the deal cost extra $$$ on weekends) you'll probably be rewarded with some tasty maki or sushi pizza.

I really like the grub here.
Although i dont like the fact that they use chopped yellow onions on the sushi pizza ....I prefer chives..
You get so much foood by the time you leave you will go home...take a nice dump....and pass out.

Sushi Island is a pretty good spot for all-you-can-eat! Sushi Haru down the street has better quality and presentation, but no AYCE. The AYCE at Island is good because for 17bucks, tip included, you get to select from a good breadth of sushi options. Seriously, it's a good spot.

I'd only venture here for AYCE. It makes an affordable and delicious option for sampling. Some of their rolls are fantastic like Fire & Ice, the Tempura yam/sweet potato rolls, and their Firecracker roll, as well as their brown rice options. If you want to order off the menu you'll get better quality at Sushi D or Sushi Haru.
I find the staff, especially the manager/host quite rude (he's the biggest turn off about the place). It's hard to get attentive service sometimes and they always make you feel rushed as they try to push you out so they can get more AYCE diners in.

The quality has gone downhill the last year or so.

Hellow,
It is intersting to see a sushi-bar front from out side of US.
Even the sushi looks different too. Also totally different than Japan too !! Here, in Los Angeles we teach sushi too. Try visit our saite if you could: www.sushitrainer.com.
Thank you.

Yes, there are better quality places in town, but where else can you eat all the sashimi, sushi, rolls, and anything else off the menu, as many times as you can, for $25? If you skip the sashimi, you can have all you can eat for $17.
It's still a great deal for the quality and quantity you get.

As far as the comment above that everyone at the table has to order the same thing, that's a little misleading. If you go with 3 friends, and 2 order 'all you can eat', then the others all have to order 'all you can eat'. Not the same items, not the same thing, but the same 'price option', as they don't like people to order 'all you can eat', and then feed it to their friends who may only be ordering/paying for a single roll. I can't blame them.
All things considered, it's a great deal, if you love sushi/sashimi but don't love paying the $80-$100 per person prices, if you are hungry and love sashimi.

I got food poisoning from eating the salmon sashimi here in March this year, and I found out later that a few friends had also gotten food poisoning here the week before. I will not be going back anytime soon!

In my party of 4, 2 people got serious food poisoning here in March 2009 as well! On March 16th to be exact. It was absolutely horrible and like Melissa, once we started chatting with others - we realized we knew about 3-4 other individuals who got also become extremely ill during this time period. It was the last time I ate there and unfortunately, am no longer able to eat Sushi anymore. Period!

And if anyone cares, here is the DineSafe report from March 19th showing that they were given a conditional pass - with crucial and significant concerns from the inspector!

I go to sushi island with my boyfriend almost every week. Some of the servers can be a bit cold at times, and yes they have a tendency to rush you out when it is busy, but for 18 bucks, you can't go wrong.

The beef sashimi is the best in city, I have tried at 14 different places and no one gets it even close to this good. The crunchy rolls are to die for and the edamame is never too cooked, like most places. Every restaurant has it's pros and cons, but really for an all you can eat bargain this place is it! In the past two years we been here at least 40 times and we have never gotten sick.

Service is so bad. Too much rules. We complained about one thing, and they started speaking Chinese with anger in front of us. My friends and I never go back this place again.

I went here tonight for the first time and ordered the 3rd level of all you can eat. Rolls were all..... bland, nothing really stood out - ordered a monster, orange, bc, firehouse, firecracker and fire and ice - all were bland. Best thing there probably was the salmon sashimi and the beef sashimi (yum). Dish out the extra 5 dollars and go to Sushi D further down the street or anywhere else to be honest. Servers at Sushi Island were just plain, i guess to say unenthusiastic about being there. Definitely will not be going again.
