Seeti Maarr

Seeti Maarr is Toronto's spot for South Indian-style pulaos. This tiny takeout joint can be found in a food court just off of Eglinton Ave in Scarborough.

Raghava is one of three partners behind this growing enterprise. He credits their success to the "back home" flavours used in their cooking.

"You can't find these flavours anywhere else in Canada," he tells us.

seeti maarr torontoI was impressed by the restaurant's vast selection of rice dishes.

Seeti Maarr offers more than fifty types of pulao, each of which is available in three sizes: regular, family size and jumbo.

seeti maarr torontoThe regular size is meant to feed a single person, but the portions are big enough for a small group to share.

Appetizers and finger foods are also available, giving adventurous foodies a chance to sample South Asian snacks.

seeti maarr torontoOne such snack is the Cut Mirchi ($9.99), a light but flavourful dish which can be considered India's answer to jalapeno poppers.

These double-fried fritters are built around green chilies and sprinkled with coriander and red onions.

While their golden coating may look appealing, first time tasters should approach with caution: these fritters pack a serious punch.

Luckily, each order comes with a lime wedge, which helps to balance out the spice.

seeti maarr torontoDespite their name, the Pakoda Chicken Wings ($12.99) are completely boneless.

Instead of the drums and flats we're used to, these "wings" are loaded chunks of fried chicken, doused with fragrant spices and garnished with bay leaves and roasted cashews.

Raghava and his team informed us that, while most restaurants fill pakodas with a mix of meat and lard, Seeti Maarr strives to use as much meat as possible.

seeti maarr torontoAndhra Chicken Fry Pulao ($13.99) is one of several types of chicken pulao available.

Consisting of tender fried chicken and vegetables on a bed of long grain rice, this dish takes its name from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, which is known for its spicy food.seeti maarr torontoThe Mutton Kheema Pulao ($15.49) uses finely ground mutton, green chilies and cashews to create a hearty dish with a texture that's almost reminiscent of chili con carne.seeti maarr torontoNalli Gosht Pulao ($16.99) is one of the newest additions to the menu — so new, in fact, that you won't find it on any of the flyers!

This dish's main selling point is a slow-cooked lamb shank, smothered in savoury sauce.

Unsurprisingly, this meal was by far the meatiest of the three pulaos. Had I been dining alone, the lamb shank would have taken me days to finish.

seeti maarr torontoEach pulao is served with sides of creamy raita and spicy katta. Boiled eggs can also be added for a bit of extra protein.seeti maarr torontoWash everything down with a bottle of Badam Milk ($5.99), a popular Indian beverage made from almond milk with hints of saffron and cardamom. seeti maarr torontoMango Lassi ($3.99) is another great drink option, with a soft, velvety texture and an unbeatable fruity flavour. seeti maarr torontoFinish your meal with a generous helping of Annavaram Prasadam ($5.99), served in a traditional leaf-wrapped bowl.

This sweet porridge, known in some parts of the world as "the divine food", is made from a combination of wheat, sugar and jaggery.

Topped with cashews, this dessert is a must-try for anyone looking to expand their palate.
